Sacramento, CA trio Swimming in Bengal made an instant impression on J&C with their Vol. 1 CD for Lather Records in 2014.

Jed Brewer (gourd guitar), Tony Passarell (saxophone/flute/percussion) and Alex Jenkins (drums/tablas/percussion) brew intoxicating blends of free jazz, drone and lung-flooding, hookah-infused Eastern raga. Fans of earlier J&C releases by Bird People and Pete Fosco will find much to enjoy here; sit back, close your eyes and just let this slow, snakish music drift.

"The album was recorded at Alex Jenkins’ studio and turned out to be a more relaxed and trancey session.

Highlights include the guest djembe playing of Elisa Lucero on “Buzzed Elephant” and Tony Passarell’s dan tranh playing on “Caves at Son Doong.” “Maze of Maize” and the title track round out the recording. Having trouble sleeping? Please join us in the village!" (Swimming in Bengal)

Any member of that cohort which has begun applying the gamelan tag to anything vaguely sounding like metal objects knocking together, & anyone who ever wondered what it would be like to be reincarnated as the middle piece of a wind-chime will be immediately enthralled by this release. As a bonus, the wind-chime is built entirely out of recycled mechanical wrist-watches which are haunted by their previous owners who worked in the office of a harmonica factory, but that's not immediately apparent. acmochi
